Direct drilling in sugar beet cultivation: benefits for soil, yield and efficiency

Direct drilling is characterised by minimal soil disturbance and offers a number of agronomic benefits, particularly in sugar beet cultivation. Of particular note is the improved soil structure: by avoiding intensive, full-surface tillage, capillary systems and earthworm tunnels are preserved and can continue to develop. This leads to better water retention, increased load-bearing capacity and, at the same time, reduces the risk of erosion – a crucial factor, particularly on sensitive sites.

A further advantage lies in the almost year-round soil cover provided by the consistent sowing of catch crops and the retention of organic matter on the soil surface. These measures protect the soil from drying out, reduce evaporation losses and promote active soil life. Organic matter is continuously built up in the topsoil and transported into deeper layers by soil organisms. Thanks to year-round cover, the soil remains moist and productive for longer, even during dry periods – an important basis for stable beet yields.

There are also benefits in terms of crop production: weed pressure is generally lower, as the lack of soil disturbance means fewer seeds are stimulated to germinate. Combined with precision techniques such as spot spraying, crop protection can be carried out in a more targeted and resource-efficient manner. At the same time, the use of fungicides and insecticides can often be reduced, not least due to more stable crops and adapted crop rotations.

However, these advantages are offset by challenges. For instance, the soil warms up more slowly in spring, which can lead to delayed early development of the sugar beet. Furthermore, snail and vole populations may become more prevalent, as their habitats are less disturbed. Field emergence is also often less uniform, which is why higher sowing rates may be necessary. As a result, yield reductions of around 4 to 8% can occur in sugar beet cultivation.

At the same time, direct drilling requires a high degree of management, experience and adapted technology – particularly in terms of precise seed placement, crop management and plant protection. However, if the system is implemented consistently, it remains economically attractive and can deliver its benefits in the long term.

Conclusion: Direct drilling can also be a sustainable method in sugar beet cultivation, offering clear benefits for soil structure, water management and resource efficiency. Despite certain challenges, practical experience shows that the system is economically viable and can be a sensible alternative to conventional mulch sowing, particularly under difficult site conditions.
